Submissions
Submission Preparation Checklist
As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.- The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
-
Authors have been granted approval by an institutional ethics committee for research involving human subjects, if applicable. This information does not need to be stated in the manuscript.
-
The submission is categorized appropriately (e.g., Feature, Program Article, Research and Evaluation Strategies), meeting the article type criteria and word count described under Section Policies. Word counts do not include references, tables, and figures.
-
The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal. The submission file is in Microsoft Word format (.doc or .docx).
- If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed. Because JYD follows a double-blind reviewing procedure, authors must submit a blinded manuscript without any author names and affiliations. Self-identifying citations and references in the article text should be avoided.
-
The title is 12 or fewer words and does not contain abbreviations. The title is compelling and reflective of the content. The running head has less than or equal to 50 characters, including spaces.
-
In a single paragraph of 150- 250 words (not the first paragraph of the manuscript), the abstract describes the purpose of the manuscript, methods used, and the results and implications that can be drawn. The abstract does not include abbreviations, hyperlinks or citations. It should be able to stand on its own and focus on the original article, not the work of others.
-
The keywords list includes no more than five words and/or phrases that reflect the content of the manuscript and are specific and user-friendly.
-
Tables are constructed with the tables function of Microsoft Word; they are not embedded objects. Tables are necessary and are not excessively large. Ask yourself if the table is necessary to improve the reader's understanding. All tables and figures are referred to (by table/figure number) in the body of the text preceding the table. Each table has a title placed above and outside the table, under the table number. Do not use colors; the JYD template has its own color scheme. For any table or figure that is reproduced or adapted from a copyrighted source, an appropriate acknowledgment is included. Alt text is provided to describe tables/figures for those using screen readers.
-
Entries in the References section are left-aligned, not indented, and single-spaced, with one line of space between entries. If a reference listing has a DOI include the DOI following this format: https://doi.org/XXX. Every in-text citation must be included in the references and every reference citation must be cited in the text.
- It can be difficult to secure reviewers, which can lengthen the publication process. To assist, please provide the names and emails of several potential reviewers in the Comments field (avoid colleagues, friends or project partners).
- Authors have obtained any necessary written permission for use of copyrighted material contained within the article. Authors agree to the Journal of Youth Development Copyright Notice below.

- Upon Publisher’s request, the Author agrees to furnish promptly to Publisher, at the Author’s own expense, written evidence of the permissions, licenses, and consents for use of third-party material included within the Work, except as determined by Publisher to be covered by the principles of Fair Use.

- the Work is the Author’s original work;
- the Author has not transferred, and will not transfer, exclusive rights in the Work to any third party;
- the Work is not pending review or under consideration by another publisher;
