Abstract

Learning and adjusting to a new culture can often be an exciting and challenging experience. Young people experiencing new cultures hold a unique set of experiences that influence their transition into adulthood. The following essay highlights the experiences of a college freshman who recently immigrated from Kenya. The author tackles issues surrounding adjusting to new cultures and obstacles he has faced and highlights important life lessons that have helped his success.

Titus Kiragu Kariuki, Highline College, Des Moines, WA.

Brief autobiography.
  • Born and raised in Kenya, East Africa, moved in to the United States a year ago. Currently residing in Washington.
  • Full time student at Highline College, Des Moines, WA. Currently studying an Associates of Science- Computer Science for a general transfer degree to a four year university (most likely the University of Washington.)
  • Off studies, I work as a community volunteer and program coordinator at the Speak Truth And New Direction (STAND) organization, which is aimed at assisting Washington minors and teens in the prevention of the indulgence of drug and substance abuse.
  • Hobbies include; music, art, poetry, photograohy, trying new recipes, personal and spiritual development and socializing too!
